Mrs. Rolls' 1st Grade Class

Hello, my name is Leslie Rolls and let me tell you a little about myself. I am from Odessa, TX (in West Texas). My husband, Marty, and I have 4 grown sons and their names are Rocky, Josh, Daniel and Eric. Great news this past September our son Daniel got married to a wonderful lady named Meredith.  We also have 4 dogs.  We inherited our last dog from my parents.  He is a wonderful boy named Amos.  Our other dogs are Berney, Boo-Radley, and Rowdy. We also have 2 cats, Miss Kitty and Contessa. Some of my hobbies are traveling, crafting, reading, and cooking.
I graduated from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa, TX.
I am so excited to be starting my fourteenth year of teaching. I have taught P.P.C.D, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First grade. This will be my 8th year teaching first grade. Please know your children are in capable, loving hands!

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child. I want our classroom to be a fun and safe place for your child. First grade should be a positive experience! In an effort to maintain the high quality of education that Hutto ISD is committed to, the partnership between school and home is very important. The following information is very important and will be helpful throughout the year.

Math Homework

Parents,
I wanted to drop you a quick line to check in and discuss the math homework.

As for the math homework, I wanted to give you a brief explanation of what we are doing.  As a faculty we have been meeting in vertical teams, meaning one teacher from each grade level, K-4.  We have been discussing how we can improve on each grade level to help our kids be better prepared for the testing they will do in the upper grades, and be better all around learners.  One thing that was discussed is the fact that so many of our students still do not know basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts by memory.  This is something we will be addressing over the next 6-7 weeks.  We will have a two pronged approach.  The students will be introduced to a new set of facts each week (this week is +0) by learning the "rule" and a song.  They will complete a page of the facts for homework each week (the song in included in the parent letter, so feel free to practice at home).  They will also participate in a program at school called "Rocket Math".  This is a timed fact practice program that the kids will move through at their own pace.  You can help your child at home by creating or buying flashcards to drill with.  The goal is for them to be able to say the answer automatically and quickly...no counting on fingers.  :) I uploaded the file I used to get the homework pages to the homework section on the webpage.  There are extra pages there and flashcards that you are welcome to print out and use at home for extra practice.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks for your continued support!
